Yeah - about that post below… I thought I was despondent before, but NOW…
I’m a “true believer”. Being a TB means I am conservative even if it means we Republicans loose power, influence, loose the battle or even the war. I’m a conservative on principle. I knew there were a few of the “other kind” in the Senate and House - opportunists, personality disorders and bored rich kids with nothing else to do… Hagel, Spector, McCain, etc. but imagine my shock to find out that our party is a veritable hotbed of CONservatives. Kyl, Graham, McConnell, etc.
That’s right - their motto was commandeered from our friend on my header for this page - Groucho: “Those are my principles. If you don’t like them…I have others”.
They are not going to actually come out and say what it is we all know - 20 million is a huge constituency and if the Republicans allow the Democrats to pass amnesty on their own - they will OWN that constituency. These CONservatives are just trying to retain a piece of that pie for the future of the Republican party.
Well and good then; but what deal with the devil has ever been struck that did not require a soul? The soulof the Republican Party has always been, and will ever be - conservatism. No deal with Teddy Ken…er…the devil can do anything but dilute it.
Amnesty is going to bite someone in the ass. If the Dems pass it on their own, they will be spinning plates for the next 25 years trying to balance the appeasement of yet another needy constituency without hacking off other minorities. In the meantime, Republicans may be able to make inroads as they loosen their grip on other victim classes.
If the Republicans help pass it - guess what? 11 to 20 million American CITIZENS (who can now VOTE) are going to be told that Republicans are responsible for requiring more from them than other American Citizens. “We didn’t want to make you learn English, pay a fine, get a tamper-proof card, but the Republicans insisted because they are racists.” Republicans will then spend the next 30 years trying to crawl out of that hole like they have with African Americans since the 60’s.
Republicans: stand now on the rule of law, build a fence, deport the criminals, require tamper-proof ID’s, severely truncate ALL Mexican immigration, and let the American people run to you for leadership. Neglect it and be irrelevant for the next 8 and possibly the next 30 years.
The Presidential candidate that promises all this will be elected…SOMEBODY…ANYBODY…PLEASE!
And finally, here are some inspiring quotes from our Republican leaders. The next Reagan is not in this crowd:
Michael Chertoff on Ted Kennedy:
“He’s Awesome!”
Lindsey Graham:
“I’m a member of the United States Senate who believes it’s my job to work with Democrats to do hard things”
“This legislation is not amnesty”
President George Bush
“This bill is not amnesty”
John Mcain
“It’s not amnesty”
John Kyl
“…you have to make concessions to Democrats”
“I don’t think it’s amnesty”
Guess what?
It’s amnesty.
