It wasn’t close, really, but my son was there not long ago. With these people. On this mountain. Doing the same job.

Life was, if not simple, at least clearer then. Serve your country, come home, get a job, get married, raise a family, buy a house…on and on.

I know it got more complicated than that as time went on, but it didn’t seem like it to me. (more…)

The press has characterized Michael Shiavo as everything from a saint to Satan’s henchman.

People with a distinct and narrow agenda have conferred his canonization. His lawyer, representing those proponents of euthanasia without limit and a member of the Hemlock Society himself, has been flush with praise for Michael, his love for Terri and the “beauty” of Terri’s death.

Let’s face it; Michael is just not that kind of guy. He’s moved in with another woman, he’s having children with her. One just simply cannot make the case that he is a moral giant intent upon carrying out Terri’s wishes even if it costs him everything. No, he’s no saint.

On the other end, there are those who will say he is evil because he is actively killing an innocent for no reason whatsoever. There are people willing to bear the burden of her care and release him entirely from any responsibility. People have even offered to pay him to do so. Since Terri’s death he has refused to allow the parents in the room with her body, refused to tell them where the funeral will be and decided to cremate her body against her birth family’s wishes and religious convictions even though he has no convictions either way of his own.

Oh, he’s MEAN, no doubt. And there’s a good case for calling him evil as well. But, let’s consider for a moment that he is not evil. Evil is it’s own motive. If he is not evil, he has another motive for what he is doing.

The only thing to be gained from the death of Terri is the assurance that she will never be able to speak for herself. It’s no secret that there is evidence that Terri suffered some trauma the night of her heart attack. There are even some that accuse Michael directly of attacking Terri.

So, is that it? Did he kill his wife to keep her quiet? I think so. Maybe because he tried to kill her. Maybe because he doesn’t want her anymore. Maybe because it’s just easier this way and he doesn’t want to look petty to the whole world. What the heck? She can’t fight back!

I believe Michael Shiavo shows us what we all are with no moral foundation; just a regular guy bowing to his prurient interests. He’s serving the only god he knows – Michael Shiavo.
